Start by measuring the table
It may seem obvious, but often the lack of these dimensions is an obstacle when choosing a tablecloth. It is worth measuring the length and width of the table (in the case of round tables, measure the diameter) and write it down, e.g. in notes on your phone. Thanks to this, if you accidentally come across a perfect tablecloth during unplanned shopping, you will be able to choose the right size of the tablecloth. It is worth noting that the standard height of the tables is about 75 cm and the recommended length of the tablecloth is adjusted to this height. If you have a table with a non-standard height, it is worth saving this dimension as well.What should be the length of the overhang of the tablecloth?
With the standard height of the table (about 75 cm) and chairs (about 45 cm), the fabric of the tablecloth should protrude 20-25 cm on each side - we call this tablecloth overhang. With such a length, the tablecloth does not touch the seats of the chairs, which looks very aesthetic, and at the same time is also practical. Thanks to the properly selected length of the overhang of the tablecloth, people sitting at the table do not have to worry about sitting down or getting up from the table. If the tablecloth is too long, there would be a risk of pulling the tablecloth and thus removing the tableware from the table. Multifunctional solutions are very practical, but unfortunately, in the case of tablecloths, it is hard to find such. When calculating the size of the tablecloth, add to the length of the overhang the difference between the height of your table and the standard table height (75 cm) if you have a higher table. If your table is lower than the standard one, subtract the difference between the standard table height (75 cm) and the height of your table from the overhang length.Exceptions to the tablecloth sizing rules
When looking for inspiration for the perfect tablecloth for the table, we can also find exceptions. An example are very elegant stylizations (e.g. during weddings), especially at round tables, where the tablecloth reaches almost to the floor. Is it a mistake? Absolutely not! During everyday use of the table, such a tablecloth would be very impractical, but on special occasions we can afford to make exceptions. A tablecloth with a length reaching the ground is very elegant and is a great setting for such events.
